Who Do I Sue?
In personal injury law, there may be situations where one could possibly sue several different people for the same injury. In the example of the slip and fall due to icy conditions, the landlord may be at fault, but so may the person the landlord hired to shovel the walk or the person who left a large item in the walkway cleaner's way (making them unable to complete the cleaning of the walkway).
Figuring out who to sue may be a tricky question in that some of the parties may not be reachable due to death or unknown whereabouts. A good personal injury lawyer will be able to help you figure out which party or parties to sue, and in many cases it makes sense to sue more than one party, especially if that party has "deeper pockets" (is wealthier). For example, if you win your suit against one of the parties, that person could than go back to another person who he feels was at least partially at fault to help pay for the expenses.
Of course, this whole matter of who to sue can be very complicated, and sometimes even against what you feel is common sense. This is one of many reasons consulting a qualified personal injury attorney is so vital, as they can help you sort through what can be an overwhelming amount of information.
