How to Find a Good Personal Injury Lawyer

You should conduct an interview to find the right personal injury lawyer. In interviewing a personal injury lawyer, there are many questions you must ask, as well as things you should bring with you.

SPOTLIGHT

1. Bring all relevant documents that may pertain to the case.
2. Bring pen and paper to take extensive notes.
3. Discuss fees and fee arrangements. Many personal injury lawyers will take a case on contingency, but make sure you understand the percentages involved.
4. Ask about their background, both as an attorney in general and with the specific type of personal injury case you may be involved with.
5. Ask about who else they may be working with. Many lawyers are in firms and/or utilize paralegals who may become extensively involved in your case. You may need to interview or discuss things with these people as well in making your decision.
6. Be very honest with the personal injury lawyer. If you are at all evasive or untruthful in your initial discussions, you may not get a true handle on what the personal injury attorney can do for you. Remember, without a real understanding of your case, there's no way for them to make any kind of educated guess about how it may be resolved.
7. As much as you can, trust your judgment and intuition about the personal injury lawyer. If you feel uncomfortable with them as a person or as a professional, remember you may be dealing with them very intimately for quite some time.
8. Make sure you feel they understand what you say to them and are able to communicate to you what they think may happen if you hire them.
9. Remember that you may feel uneasy when dealing with a personal injury attorney, especially as you may be visiting them in a time of great turmoil. Try to keep this in mind when making a decision about them - the problem may not be with them, but perhaps with your own state of mind. In such a case, taking time after the meeting to really think about how it went may be better than making a quick decision on whether or not to hire them.
10. Whoever you decide to hire, keep in mind that they will be working for you. If you feel that their manner is not one that makes you feel at ease (or as much at ease as is possible, given the circumstances), perhaps you are better off hiring a different personal injury attorney.
