When Do I Need A Divorce Lawyer?
Simply having marital problems is usually not a good reason to seek out a divorce attorney, especially as the first thing a good divorce lawyer will ask you and/or your spouse is "Have you sought counseling and do you think you can work things out?" However, if one or both of you fully believe things can not be worked out, it is time to at least approach a divorce attorney to help protect your rights.
If your spouse files for divorce with or without your knowledge and you are served with papers, obviously at that time it is wise to consult a divorce attorney. In some very simple situations, where truly nothing is being contested, some individuals can get by without a divorce attorney and simply follow one of the many "do it yourself" divorce kits available. In such a case you get what you paid for, and the price for having made a mistake or not having fully thought something out can be quite steep.
The old expression "better safe than sorry" couldn't be truer then when dealing with making a decision as to whether or not to consult or retain a divorce lawyer. The risk of not knowing your rights can be enormous, and can alter the rest of your life. No matter how "simple" the divorce may seem, consulting with a divorce lawyer is sound advice.
