Alimony and Child Support
Two very commonly used terms in divorce law are alimony and child support, and a qualified divorce attorney will help to make sure their client is able to come to as favorable a situation as is legally possible. Alimony can be a part of the scenario whether or not there are children involved, as alimony provides support to the spouse who does not work or doesn't have a sufficient income. Traditionally, alimony went from the male to the female, but in recent years, there have been many situations where the female ends up paying alimony to the male.
Child support often is awarded in addition to alimony when there are children involved, and is defined as the funds paid by one parent to the other to provide for the child or children after the divorce. The spouse with custody may be a candidate to receive child support, which will often last until the child becomes of age, though this may last longer with special needs children or with children attending college.
