Alchoholism and Drug Addiction
It's hard to state exact numbers, but there is little doubt that many people arrested for DUI or DWI offenses suffer from drug and/or alcohol addiction or dependency. Forgetting for a moment the legal ramifications, drug and alcohol addictions are enormously costly to both the individual and to society, let alone to the individual's family, co-workers and friends.
No matter how your DUI or DWI case may turn out, if there's even a chance that your situation may have been caused by addiction or dependency, it is so important to look into some form of treatment. Be it talking to a counselor, joining a recovery program, entering a detox center or a combination of these, making such a decision can save lives. While of course many DUI or DWI cases don't involve addiction or dependency, looking into treatment can also win favor with a judge in terms of sentencing. For example, in some states for a first offense, the judge may order attending meetings as part of the legal judgment.
If you are or think you may have a dependency problem, seeking some form of treatment as soon as possible may not only be good for your health and your state of mind, it may also help to win favor with the court. Proof that you are actually doing something about a possible issue is a big step in fixing the problem, and many judges look at an individuals' attempts at fixing it as a big factor in sentencing.
